Aston Villa have both history and recent form on their side heading into their opening-day Premier League meeting with Brighton at the AMEX Stadium.

The Villans have won 21 of 37 meetings, losing just six, and have taken victory in each of their last three encounters. They also completed the league double over Brighton last season, finishing fourth to the Seagulls’ eighth as both clubs secured European soccer.

Statistically, though, there was little between them.

Villa scored 56 goals to Brighton’s 52 and conceded 49 compared with Brighton’s 46. Their numbers for percentage of shots on target (~35%), goalkeeper save percentage (~69%) and possession (~40%) were also remarkably similar.

With both teams losing important players this summer—Villa parting with Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans, while Brighton lost Danny Welbeck and Jan Paul van Hecke—the gap between them could be even smaller this time around.

Similar teams, similar numbers and very little to separate them.
