Why Bruno Guimaraes Isn’t Playing for Arsenal vs. Coventry—Premier League

LONDON — A groin injury has delayed Bruno Guimarães’s Premier League debut for Arsenal ahead of Friday’s curtain-raiser against Coventry City.
The $101 million recruit from Newcastle United delighted in a superb debut against Manchester City, offering a blend of grace and grit which rapidly endeared him to a new fanbase. Guimarães only lasted 45 minutes in the Community Shield, although his halftime withdrawal hadn’t initially raised any concerns given the quasi-friendly status of the fixture. As it would transpire, Mikel Arteta wasn’t simply managing the midfielder’s minutes.
Fears of fitness concerns were raised in the buildup to Arsenal’s opening Premier League clash with Coventry at the Emirates. Arteta didn’t give Guimarães a clean bill of health but also wasn’t overly pessimistic. “Let’s see how he is,” the Basque boss told assembled media on Thursday. “He’s evolving really well, but let’s see for tomorrow.”
As Arsenal’s fans would see for themselves in the hour leading up to the evening kickoff, Guimarães had not made the matchday squad.
Arteta would explain that the Brazil international was suffering from “a slight tension in his groin” after a disrupted post-World Cup summer. “He hasn’t done a preseason, he only had four or five days before that [Manchester City] game,” the Arsenal manager explained. “We have to take a lot of new stuff for him as well.”
Arsenal Confirmed Lineup vs. Coventry
Starting XI (4-3-3): David Raya; Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera, Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori; Martin Ødegaard, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Declan Rice; Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Christos Tzolis.
Substitutes: Kepa Arrizabalaga (GK), Piero Hincapié, Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyökeres, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Martín Zubimendi, Max Dowman.
In place of Guimarães, Arteta opted for the change which he deployed in the Community Shield: Declan Rice. Turning to one of the nominees for last season’s Player of the Year is hardly a sacrifice but the continued selection of Myles Lewis-Skelly is intriguing in its own right.
Martín Zubimendi clearly remains an understudy after struggling at the end of last season. The World Cup winner was a nailed-on starter for the first nine months of his Arsenal career only for that regular selection to prove his undoing.
“At the end, he didn’t play that much,” Arteta admitted this week. “He still played some important minutes, but no-one can neglect what he did and how important he is for us.” Clearly not important enough to start ahead of a teenager who had never made a senior start in midfield until May.
When Will Bruno Guimaraes Be Back for Arsenal?

At this exceedingly early stage, any timeline for Guimarães’s return has to be considered in the vaguest of terms. The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards was the first to put forward the suggestion that the 28-year-old will be sidelined for “a few weeks,” but that remains to be seen.
Arteta was typically cryptic. “We need to take it bit by bit,” was all he would offer prematch.
There is a very clear demarcation for the 2026–27 season, with Arsenal facing six fixtures before the first (extended) international window of the campaign in September. Alongside the club’s first round of league phase fixtures in the Champions League, the Gunners have five Premier League matches to navigate.
After Friday’s opener against Coventry, Arteta’s side has been tasked with an unenviable sequence of games. After a trip to Aston Villa, there is a London derby with Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea followed by the daunting journey up to Sunderland. Régis Le Bris’s side collected 33 points and conceded just 20 goals in 19 home league games last term. Arsenal, just like Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, dropped points at the Stadium of Light last term.
