Historically, there is almost nothing between Ipswich Town and Sunderland, who meet on the opening weekend of the 2026–27 Premier League season.

Across 58 meetings, Ipswich have won 25, Sunderland 24 and nine have been draws. Their last five clashes, across the Championship and League One, have produced two wins apiece and a draw. This time, though, Sunderland look like the safer pick.

Régis Le Bris’s side are coming off a remarkable campaign in which they defied relegation expectations to qualify for Europe, while posting the Premier League’s fourth-best defensive record, conceding just 48 goals.

Ipswich, meanwhile, earned automatic promotion after recovering from a slow start, relying heavily on defensive resilience and grinding out results. With Kieran McKenna gone and Gary O’Neil taking over, there is plenty of uncertainty around the Tractor Boys.

History says this one is close. Recent evidence favors Sunderland.
