On one side, one of the most historic clubs in the entire world. A side that has struggled to find consistent success ever since the departure of the iconic Sir Alex Ferguson. On the other, a club that dominated English football during Pep Guardiola’s glorious reign.

Dating back to the late 1800s, the Manchester derby almost always delivers must-see goals, ferocious clashes and thrilling moments across all competitions. Man Utd and Man City have taken turns dominating the fixture, but the Red Devils have the all-time edge thanks to the club’s excellence under the aforementioned Ferguson.

The Cityzens have since closed the gap in their head-to-head with United due to Guardiola’s greatness, but the first meeting of the 2026–27 season sees Enzo Maresca attempt to follow in his former mentor’s footsteps.

There have been 198 Manchester derbies since the two clubs played their first match against one another back in 1891. At the time, City went by Ardwick AFC and United were called Newton Heath. The fixture took place in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, and Newton Heath walked away with a 5–1 victory.

Over the next nearly century and a half, United tallied 81 victories over their rivals, while City recorded 63 wins against the Red Devils. There have been 54 draws between the two sides across all competitions.

In 58 Premier League Manchester derbies, United have secured 27 victories, while City have managed 21 wins. Only ten Premier League fixtures between the two clubs have ended in a draw.

United turned to familiarity after parting ways with Ruben Amorim last season, as Darren Fletcher took charge of two games before Michael Carrick was sworn in as interim manager for a second time.

Guardiola had highlighted his fear of the unknown ahead of the 198th Manchester Derby in Jan. 2026, with Carrick the sixth and final United manager he came up against during his decade as City boss.

Guardiola’s prematch concerns proved justified as Carrick’s Red Devils comprehensively outplayed the Cityzens in a 2–0 victory. The hosts overwhelmed Rodri at the base of midfield and took advantage of a weakened City defence, with Gianluigi Donnarumma often coming to the away side’s rescue before Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock.

City were unable to muster a response, as Patrick Dorgu doubled United’s lead from Matheus Cunha’s cross. Things could’ve gotten worse for Guardiola’s side late on, as Mason Mount had a third goal ruled out for offside, but the Old Trafford faithful were more than content with two.

Despite enduring the worst Premier League campaign in their history, United were unbeaten against their crosstown rivals in 2024–25. However, Guardiola’s Cityzens returned to winning ways in this fixture at the start of 2025–26, as they overcame back-to-back defeats to down Amorim’s side 3–0.

Phil Foden inspired the hosts, opening the scoring before Erling Haaland struck twice. Damningly, City didn’t have to be close to their best to beat United with comfort.
