Serena Williams wins Wimbledon, moves toward calendar Grand Slam
Serena Williams won her sixth Wimbledon title on Saturday, defeating No. 20 Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4.
The victory marks top-seeded Williams' first Wimbledon title since 2012 and her 21st Grand Slam championship overall. The win also moved Williams closer to the calendar Grand Slam, which she could complete with a U.S. open title in September.
Williams trailed early in the first set, coming out of the gate slowly, including a game with three double-faults, but battled back from down 3-1 and elevated her play much closer to her standard.
The second set was all Williams, whose dominant service helped her to a 5-1 lead. Muguruza fought back to bring it to 5-4, coming up with big shots to keep her hopes alive and rallying the crowd, but Williams would close it out for title No. 6.
On her way to the final, Williams defeated the likes of No. 4 Maria Sharapova, No. 23 Victoria Azarenka and No. 16 Venus Williams.
Earlier this year, Williams won the Australian Open and French Open. If she wins the U.S. Open, she'll become the first player to win the calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988.
Williams is now only one Grand Slam title behind Graf for second all-time. Margaret Court is first all-time with 24 major titles.
