U.S. Open Day 6 after dark: Murray, Halep, Wawrinka all cruise

Full recap from the night session of Day 6 at the 2015 U.S. Open.

NEW YORK — After Serena Williams was taken to three sets and Rafael Nadal was eliminated in a five-set marathon in Friday’s night session, Saturday night at the U.S. Open contained far less surprise. Andy Murray and Simona Halep earned straight-sets victories at Arthur Ashe, while Stan Wawrinka booked a fourth-round meeting with Donald Young. Check out the Day 6 day session recap here, and catch up with news and results from Day 6 after 7 p.m. at the U.S. Open below.

No drama for Andy Murray in straight-sets win: Andy Murray came back from two sets down against Adrian Mannarino in the second round, but there was no such need on Saturday: No. 3 Murray sailed by No. 30 Thomaz Bellucci 6–3, 6–2, 7–5. Bellucci tried to play Murray at the net, but he only won 22 of 41 (54%) net points while Murray won 21 of 29 (72%). Murray served well, only allowing Bellucci two break opportunities, one of which he converted. Murray will play No. 15 Kevin Anderson in the fourth round for an opportunity to make his 19th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal (excluding the 2013 French Open, in which Murray did not play due to a back injury).

Simona Halep cruises over Shelby Rogers: No. 2 Simona Halep made easy work of Shelby Rogers in the opening match of Saturday’s night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. In just over an hour, Halep beat Rogers 6–2, 6–3 to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the second time. The Romanian played nearly mistake-free tennis, recording just nine unforced errors. Halep also won a remarkable 91% of first serve points, allowing just one break point opportunity (which Rogers converted). Halep will play No. 24 Sabine Lisicki next.

Stan The Man earns (another) straight-sets win: Stan Wawrinka has played three matches at the 2015 U.S. Open, and he still hasn’t lost a set despite failing to truly dominate any of his opponents. On Saturday, fifth-seeded Wawrinka earned a 6–3, 7–6(5), 6–4 win over Ruben Bemelmans to advance to the fourth round, where he will play American Donald Young. Young and Wawrinka met in the 2011 U.S. Open second round, when Young upset the 14th-seeded Wawrinka 7–6(7), 3–6, 2–6, 6–3, 7–6(1).

“He's a tough player. He improved a lot,” Wawrinka said of Young. “Especially his attitude on the court, he's fighting way more.”

Wawrinka is aiming to reach his third consecutive U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Kevin Anderson advances to his first U.S. Open fourth round: Since he lost to Roger Federer 6–1, 6–1 in Cincinnati last month, Kevin Anderson has reeled off eight straight victories, including a 6–3, 7–6(3), 7–6(3) win over No. 20 Dominic Thiem on Saturday. As usual, Anderson’s serve was potent: The 6'8" South African recorded 17 aces and didn’t allow a break. Anderson has now reached the fourth round at three of four Grand Slam events this year, and he’ll have a chance to reach his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal against Andy Murray.

Sabine Lisicki advances to face Halep in fourth round: Despite a strong upset bid from Barbora Strycova, No. 24 Sabine Lisicki advanced to her first Grand Slam fourth round of the year with a 6–4, 4–6, 7–5 victory at the Grandstand. Lisicki only made 46% of her first serves, and Strycova broke her six times. But behind seven breaks of her own, Lisicki advanced to her second-ever U.S. Open fourth round. Lisicki will face No. 2 Simona Halep.
