FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) Philipp Kohlschreiber will lead Germany against Poland in the Davis Cup playoffs despite a stress fracture in his right foot that forced him to miss the Olympics and to retire from his first-round match at the U.S. Open.
Kohlschreiber surprisingly appeared at the U.S. Open, only to quit against Nicolas Mahut. He is Germany's top-ranked player at No. 26.
But he was picked for the Davis Cup by captain Michael Kohlmann on Tuesday. The other three players are Florian Mayer, Jan-Lennard Struff, and Daniel Brands.
The winner of the Sept. 16-19 tie on clay in Berlin will remain in the 16-team World Group next year.
Alexander Zverev declined to play, as did Dustin Brown.
Poland named Kamil Majchrzak, Hubert Hurkacz, Lukasz Kubot, and Marcin Matkowski. Poland's top-ranked player, Jerzy Janowicz, No. 247 in the world, was sitting out. Majchrzak is No. 305 in the world.
This story has been corrected to show Kohlschreiber's ranking is No. 26.
