On this week's episode of the SI Tennis Beyond the Baseline Podcast, Sports Illustrated executive editor and host Jon Wertheim talks with Dick Enberg.
Enberg, 81, joins the podcast just a few days after retiring at the San Diego Padres final game, ending a 60-year broadcasting career across an impressive variety of sports, from tennis to baseball, college basketball and more. Enberg talks about what he will miss from his career and his plans for how he will spend him time after play-by-play announcing. Enberg recalls his time as a college professor teaching on campus and discusses his transition to "being a fan" after his retirement. Wertheim and Enberg talk about his preparation for calling a game or match, how he became interested in commentating and how he will look back on his career. As a tennis commentator for the majors for many years, Enberg recalls his time in the booth at Wimbledon—the best event to cover, in his opinion—and what it was like to work alongside Bud Collins, and later, John McEnroe.
Also on the podcast, Wertheim and Enberg talk about the place of tennis in the sports landscape and where he sees the sport going in the next few years.
