The Yankees' Hideki Matsui fell hard on his left wrist attempting to make a diving catch on Thursday. The left fielder underwent surgery for a broken wrist on Friday and is expected to miss three months. The injury snaps Matsui's streak of 1,768 consecutive games played, which dates back to his 1993 season with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan.
Former Marlins ace Josh Beckett returned to Yankee Stadium for the first time since his Game 6 shutout of the Bronx Bombers in the 2003 World Series. Now pitching for the Red Sox, Beckett surrendered only three runs over seven innings as Boston routed the Yankees 14-3 on Tuesday.
Randy Johnson heard the boos last Tuesday night in the Bronx, lasting only 3 2/3 innings and surrendering seven runs against the Red Sox. The left-hander has struggled mightily in his last six starts, going 3-3 with an ERA of 6.89.
Giants center fielder Steve Finley muffed this catch at the wall against the Astros in San Francisco last Monday.
Barry Bonds' pursuit of Babe Ruth has stalled at 713 home runs -- one shy of the Bambino. Bonds' homerless streak reached six games in Sunday's 6-3 loss to the Dodgers.
Albert Pujols drilled a Claudio Vargas offering 404 feet over the left-field wall for his 19th home run of the season Saturday at Busch Stadium. Pujols hit his 19th homer faster than any other player in major league history, beating both Mickey Mantle (1956) and Luis Gonzalez (2001) by three games.
David Bell slid under the tag of Reds third baseman Edwin Encarnacion during an 8-4 Phillies victory on Friday in Cincinnati.
Ken Griffey Jr. brandished his new pink bat commemorating Mother's Day as part of a weeklong program to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Reds' center fielder, however, went hitless in five at-bats against the Phillies.
Brandon Webb's sixth win of the year came at the Pirates' expense last Wednesday. His six wins are tied for the major league best with the Yankees' Mike Mussina.
Outfielder Shane Victorino bulldozed catcher Paul Lo Duca and scored a key eighth-inning run in the Phillies' 5-4 victory over the Mets last Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Andy Pettitte put the exclamation point on his best outing of the season, a three-hit shutout against the Rockies on Sunday in Houston.
Center fielder Aaron Rowand made a sensational over-the-shoulder catch to rob the Mets' Xavier Nady of an extra-base hit last Thursday in Philadelphia.
The heroics came at a price, however, as Rowand was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken nose and several fractured bones around his left eye.
