Twins phenom Francisco Liriano pitches against the Tigers on Aug. 7, but would leave the game with nagging pain in his throwing arm. The rookie, who leads the majors with a 2.19 ERA, is out indefinitely.
Padres Mike Piazza received a warm welcome back from the crowd at Shea Stadium on Aug. 8. The Mets won all three games in a match-up of division leaders, but Piazza stood tall in their second game with two solo shots off Pedro Martinez.
Derek Jeter failed to hit in this game, going 0-for-4 against the Angels on Aug. 12, but the Yanks still won 5-2.
Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell makes the catch as he dives into the stands at Fenway against the Orioles on Aug. 11. The Sox won the game 9-2 and went on to sweep the Orioles to put them just one game behind their rival Yankees.
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is hit by this pitch from Cardinals pitcher Anthony Reyes in the second inning of last Thursday's game in Cincinnati. Despite pitching on an upset stomach, Reyes held the Reds scoreless in five innings to win the game 6-1.
Houston 's Lance Berkman slides safely into third base against the Padres at Minute Maid Park on Aug. 13. Despite losing 7-2 to the Padres, Berkman continues to swing a hot bat as he went 2 for 4 in the game and also hit his 32nd home run the night before to give him 100 RBIs on the season.
Indians left fielder Jason Michaels missed this catch in the fourth inning, but it was little cause for concern after the Indians put up 11 runs in the first inning, including a Travis Hafner grand slam, to beat the Royals 13-0 on Aug. 13.
Howie Kendrick of the Angels is tagged out by Yankees catcher Jorge Posada in the Bronx on Aug. 13. Despite preventing a run, the Yankees were defeated 5-3, dropping two out of their last three to the Angels.
A's shortstop Marco Scutaro's off-balance throw to first base wasn't in time to catch the Rangers' Mark DeRosa. The Rangers went on to beat the Athletics 14-0.
Washington's Alfonso Soriano breaks his bat against the Florida Marlins on August 9. He had one hit in the game, a 2-1 win for the Nationals against the Marlins.
Braves center fielder Andruw Jones leaps onto the wall as he tries to catch a two-run homer by the Brewers' Bill Hall in the third inning on Aug. 12. The Brewers won 8-5 as Hall has shown a surprising surge in power this season with 26 home runs thus far.
Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal tags out the Reds' Ryan Freel at the plate in the seventh inning of Sunday's game in Philadelphia. The Reds won 7-5 in 11 innings to maintain their lead in a tight NL wild-card race.
