Randy Edsall happy Terps not in 'basketball conference' anymore

Publish date:

The Maryland Terrapins officially made the switch from the ACC to the Big Ten Conference on July 1, and football coach Randy Edsall said at a recent PressBox event that the change was a welcome for him.

"As a football coach, I feel better,” Edsall said. “Because I’m going to a football conference; I’m not in a basketball conference anymore. And so from that standpoint, has this summer been difficult on me and my coaches? It has been, because we’ve had to do a lot more preparation [...] But that’s part of it. That you have to do regardless."

The ACC has the reigning football National Champion Florida State Seminoles, and as SB Nation's Boston College blog pointed out, the Terps struggled in the conference under Edsall.

Maryland's inaugural Big Ten slate includes match-ups with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan and Michigan State. Edsall said he knows there are people who don't think his team can compete and win in their new conference, and that the Terps are working hard to "prove people wrong."

"We’re never gonna have all the resources that Ohio State or Michigan or Penn State or Michigan State have," Edsall said. "But we can have plenty enough resources where we can go and end up beating them and getting ourselves to a Rose Bowl.”
