Louisville names Will Gardner starting quarterback

Louisville names redshirt sophomore Will Gardner as the team's starting quarterback against Miami on Sept. 1.

Louisville named Will Gardner as the team's starting quarterback, the team announced Sunday night.

Gardner is a 6-foot-5, 224 pound redshirt sophomore from Douglas, Ga. Gardner replaces three-year starter Teddy Bridgewater, who left for the NFL after his junior season. 

Gardner appeared in seven games last season, completing 8 of 12 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

"I thought Will and outstanding fall camp," Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino said. "He demonstrated good decision-making and executed our offense."

Louisville opens the season against conference foe Miami on Sept. 1. The Hurricanes will also go with a first-time starter, tabbing freshman Brad Kaaya to start the season.
