Each week, the college football team here at SI will delve into the fun, the weird and the wacky of college football with a series called Between The Hashes. It’s a way to decompress from the madness of the week, and to find a few things that you might have missed.

Mississippi State is number one in the polls. This is a real thing. So the next time someone tells you they know what's going to happen in the college football season, they are lying and they should have slime poured on their head as if they're in an early 1990s Nickelodeon game show. This season is continually bringing us so many ridiculous moments, and it isn't just because this is the first year of the college football playoff.

We've got a few days to regroup and relax before the madness resumes, so try to see your families, get groceries and rest your eyeballs because things are going to get even better and weirder as we go deeper into the season.

Ring My Bell

October is quickly becoming the month of Mississippi. To celebrate (or just because he wanted to), Lou Holtz wasted no time grabbing that cowbell and getting his clanga on right in front of Mark May and Rece Davis late in the evening on Saturday. Who says a Vine can't be art?

"He finally talked to me"

After West Virginia kicker Josh Lambert hit a game-winning field goal against Maryland earlier in the season, Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen said, "I haven't talked to Josh Lambert since he got on campus." While that was tongue in cheek, of course after Lambert hit a long game-winner against Texas Tech on Saturday, he had to bring it up – and did so in the best way possible.

No One Knows What It's Like, To Be The Sad Fan

There will always be balance when it comes to college football. So for every joyful moment, there is a moment of sadness. It was felt in waves by Cal's inflatable mascot, Purdue's fans and even the live Arkansas razorback named Tusk (although it's hard to say for sure if Tusk was sad or merely a little sleepy).

Arkansas almost got a huge win over Alabama on Saturday, but the bigger story (at least as far as Hashes is concerned) was Bret Bielema's choice of attire to his interview on SEC Network in the morning. Bielema rocked the sandals look, and as a proud #TeamSandal member I had to give him props.

Keys To The Game

It's never an easy job creating graphics for games. So when it's done well or there's an extra jolt of humor involved, it should be applauded. On Friday night's game between Washington State and Stanford, they put up the players to watch. For Washington State on defense, there was a question mark. Only fitting for a team giving up an average of 35 points per game.
