Early enrollees star in Florida State's spring game

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Early enrollees led the Gold team in Florida State's spring game Saturday.

De'Andre Johnson threw a pair of touchdown passes, Derwin James returned an interception 41 yards for a score, George Campbell caught a 65-yard pass for a touchdown and Jacques Patrick had an 11-yard touchdown run for the Gold in a 38-17 win over the Garnet.

''Some of the young guys did some good things, making good plays,'' coach Jimbo Fisher said. ''Still got to learn what to do. The early-entry guys took advantage of some situations.''

The day also provided a good look at the quarterbacks as Fisher looks to replace 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston.

Sean Maguire completed 22 of 44 passes for 289 yards and two interceptions for the Garnet, leading the first-team offense.

''We had some drives where we definitely looked like a real great football team, and then we had some drives where we didn't,'' Maguire said. ''Up and down was the definition of today.''

JJ Cosentino completed 7 of 11 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown, and Johnson was 8 of 11 for 155 yards and two touchdowns for the Gold, which was the second-team offense.

RUNNING STRONG: Dalvin Cook had two touchdown runs and Mario Pender had 10 carries for 75 yards for the Garnet, which had 119 rushing yards. Patrick finished with 16 carries and 81 yards for the Gold.

FIRST-TEAM OFFENSE: After the Garnet opened with an interception and a punt on its first two drives, Maguire led two long Garnet scoring drives. A 10-play drive resulted in a field goal and a six-play drive ended with a Dalvin Cook 1-yard TD run. But Maguire struggled in the second half as the Garnet team went scoreless.

LONG RANGE: Roberto Aguayo made a 56-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Gold team. He also made a 47-yard field-goal attempt. Aguayo made 27 of 30 field goals as a sophomore in 2014.

AWARD WINNERS: Cornerback Jalen Ramsey was named the winner of the Hinesman Award, given annually to FSU's top player each spring. Dalvin Cook was named the offensive MVP, while Rick Leonard and Demarcus Walker shared the defensive MVP honors.

INJURED `NOLES: FSU was without a large group of starters from 2014, including defensive linemen Derrick Mitchell and Nile Lawrence-Stample, linebackers Reggie Northrup and Terrance Smith, and safety Tyler Hunter. About 25 scholarship players missed the game due to injury.
