Stu Holt no longer on South Florida staff, expected to join App. State
South Florida special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Stu Holt is no longer on the Bulls’ staff and is expected to join the Appalachian State staff, according to a source.
Appalachian State has an assistant job open after running backs coach Chris Foster resigned earlier this month.
Holt arrived with South Florida coach Willie Taggart after the 2012 season as the director of player personnel and took on special teams coordinating duties for the ’13 season. He assumed control of the tight ends this past year.
Prior to South Florida, Holt coached tackles and tight ends under Taggart at Western Kentucky for two seasons. He was running backs coach at Tennessee State in 2010.

Holt’s first stint at Western Kentucky was as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator from 2004-09. Prior to that, he was the head coach at New Smyrna Beach (Fla.) High for two seasons.
Holt coached inside linebackers and special teams at Bethune-Cookman in 2001, was defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at Cumberland in ’00 and served as a graduate assistant at Western Carolina from 1998-99.
After playing as a long snapper for North Carolina from 1991 to ’95, Holt joined the coaching ranks in ’96 as the linebackers and special teams coach at Norwich University in Vermont. A year later he moved to Mainland (Fla.) High to coach running backs.
Holt’s father is legendary North Carolina high school football coach B.W. Holt.
South Florida had a 4–8 record last season, doubling their win total from Taggart’s first season. The Bulls return 14 starters, including rising sophomore running back Marlon Mack, the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Year.
