Florida quarterback Treon Harris will start Saturday’s season opener against New Mexico State, head coach Jim McElwain told reporters Wednesday

McElwain reiterated, though, that Will Grier will also see snaps at quarterback for the Gators in the opener and downplayed the significance of naming Harris the starter.

“I wouldn’t read that much into it,” McElwain said, according to 247Sports.com. “Treon’s going to start the football game and Will’s going to play a lot too. It’s a painting in progress and we've got to figure out what the backdrop is going to be.”

McElwain announced last week that both Harris, a sophomore, and Grier, a redshirt freshman, would play during the opener.

Urban Meyer: Ohio State will play both quarterbacks in 2015

Grier, ranked the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2014 by Rivals, redshirted last season after injuring his back. Harris started the last six games in 2014, leading the Gators to a 4–2 record. Grier is regarded as the superior passer while Harris is known more for his ability to create plays with his legs.

Florida plays East Carolina in Week 2 and travels to Kentucky on Sept. 19 to begin SEC play.
