Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood has been suspended for three games and fined $50,000 for violating team rules when he contacted a professor in regards to the academic eligibility of cornerback Nadir Barnwell.

According to a statement released by Rutgers President Robert Barchi on Wednesday, Flood knew or should have known about the policies prohibiting coach-initiated contact with a member of the academic faculty. The statement also says that a member of the Rutgers academic advising staff reminded Flood that he should not be engaging with professors after he initially contacted the faculty member.

Barchi also says in his statement that the professor agreed to review a paper for partial credit, but it did not end up being graded, and subsequently, did not have any effect on Barnwell's academic eligibility. Flood and Barnwell both admitted that Flood suggested minor grammatical and editorial changes to Barnwell before he submitted the paper.

“I believe that the discipline is severe and justified for his failure to follow policy,” Barchi said. “I met with Coach Flood this afternoon and informed him of the suspension and the fine and he has accepted responsibility for his actions and my discipline.

“We have high expectations of every member of our community and no one is free from responsibility,” he added.

Barnwell is just one of the players involved in the recent string of Rutgers football off-field offenses. He and five other players were dismissed from the team after being arrested and charged with assault earlier this month.

Flood will miss Saturday's game at Penn State and home games against Kansas and Michigan State.
