Stony Brook escapes with 59-58 win over New Hampshire

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) Jameel Warney rejected Jaleen Smith's last-second layup with his eighth block to preserve Stony Brook's 59-58 victory Sunday over New Hampshire and the Seawolves' nation-leading 18-game winning streak.

UNH rallied from nine points down with 5 1/2 minutes left to get within one on Tanner Leissner's two free throws with 2:43 remaining. Neither team scored again, with Stony Brook's Ahmad Walker missing the front end of a 1-and-1 with 16 seconds left. UNH called time out with seven seconds remaining before Smith drove the lane but was rejected by Warney.

Warney had 16 points and eight rebounds. Carson Puriefoy added 16 points and Rayshaun McGrew 14 for Stony Brook (22-4, 13-0 America East), which clinched at least a tie for the regular-season conference title.

Leissner had 26 points and nine rebounds and Ronnel Jordan 12 points for the Wildcats (15-10, 8-4), whose four-game win streak ended.

UNH coach Bill Herrion missed the game after his mother died Saturday night.
