Kansas State beats TCU 63-49 to end league road loss streak

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Kansas State coach Bruce Weber decided accentuating the positive was the best way to finally end a Big 12 road losing streak that lasted 13 months.

Weber showed his struggling Wildcats a highlight film of their top plays before Tuesday night's game at TCU. They went out and beat TCU 63-49 led by Justin Edwards' 17 points.

Kansas State (15-11, 4-9) last won a conference road game on Jan. 10, 2015 at Oklahoma.

''We said, Hey, this is you,' " Weber said of the self-scouting report. '' `You can be this good. You can play this way,' I don't know if it helped or not. They just kept fighting through.

''The last thing I wrote on the board - `Do what you do and do it well.' That's what we tried to show `em on that tape.''

The Wildcats improved their road record this season to 2-7. Their other win came at Georgia on Dec. 4.

Edwards returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench for three games. Barry Brown added 16 points and Dean Wade 14 for the Wildcats.

Malique Trent led the Horned Frogs (11-15, 2-11) with 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. TCU squandered a chance to escape the conference cellar and move into a three-way tie for eighth place.

The Wildcats won despite shooting only 38.8 percent, holding the Frogs to 32.7 percent. TCU, last in conference scoring at 60.5 points going into the game, failed to break 50 for the second straight game. The Frogs lost 73-42 at West Virginia on Saturday.

''It's contagious and it's tough when things aren't going well, but there's no secret to it,'' Frogs coach Trent Johnson said. ''The responsibility's on me to get this thing to where they're playing right. Our fan base deserves better.''

TCU's Chauncey Collins was 3-for-13 shooting and finished with nine points after equaling a career-high 20 at West Virginia last Saturday. He said the players aren't on the same page.

''Sometimes we're not ready to compete, not ready to play,'' Collins said.

The 14-point win was Kansas State's largest since it beat Oklahoma State 89-73 on Jan. 23.

Brown, a freshman, was 4 for 6 from 3-point range. He hit all four of his field-goal attempts in the first nine minutes, including three 3s, and had 11 first-half points.

''Maybe TCU won't be the biggest game we'll play, but we were pretty hyped for the game,'' Brown said. ''We were yelling in the locker room before the game. I suppose that carries over.''

The Wildcats built a 26-11 lead nine minutes in, outshooting the Frogs 61.5 percent to 27.3. To that point, TCU had more field goals made from behind the arc (2 for 6) than inside it (1 for 6).

The Frogs cut a 13-point deficit to nine points with 13:59 left in the second half but got no closer. Kansas State's 17-point lead midway through the second half was its largest of the game.

SICK BAY

K-State's D.J. Johnson was limited to four points and three rebounds in 16 minutes because of sickness. ''He couldn't even do shootaround,'' Weber said. ''I didn't think he'd play.''

FOUL TERRITORY

TCU center Chris Washburn picked up his second foul after only 3:05 and sat the rest of the first half. He finished with no points, three blocks and two rebounds in 16 minutes.

TIP-INS

Kansas State: The Wildcats got only seven bench points. . Wesley Iwundu went into the game leading K-State averaging 12.4 points but scored only five points, on 1-for-10 shooting.

TCU: The Frogs outscored K-State 24-22 in the paint but hit only three of 16 3-pointers. . Karviar Shepherd returned after missing two games with a sore knee.
