Steve Belichick Set to Become Defensive Coordinator at Washington, per Report

Former New England Patriots defensive play caller Steve Belichick, son of legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick, is set to take over as the defensive coordinator of the Washington Huskies, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

Belichick, 36, has spent the past 12 seasons with the Patriots working on his father’s coaching staff. He served as the outside linebackers coach and was responsible for the defensive play calling for the last four years.

Now, he’ll join Jedd Fisch’s staff at Washington following the departure of Kalen DeBoer, who took over as coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide after Nick Saban’s retirement. 

Belichick and Fisch worked alongside one another in New England in 2020, when Fisch was the team’s quarterbacks coach prior to landing the top job for the Arizona Wildcats later that year.

It had previously been reported by ESPN’s Mike Reiss that Steve and his brother Brian would have been given the opportunity to remain on the Patriots’ coaching staff under Jerod Mayo, who replaced Bill as the franchise’s coach in January.

Instead of sticking around in New England, Steve appears set to try his hand in the college ranks, reportedly taking over as defensive coordinator at Washington following their run to the national championship last season.
