Chargers’ Joey Bosa Had 5,000 Calorie-per-Day Summer Diet to Bulk Up

Struggling with your diet is a universal experience. Virtually everyone has experienced the late-night cravings and no one really enjoys not getting to eat until your heart’s content. Chargers star Joey Bosa is struggling with his weight goals as well, but he isn’t partaking in the average Jenny Craig diet. 

Bosa told reporters Thursday that he spent the offseason eating roughly 5,000 calories per day in roughly five to six meals in order to get his weight up for the season—and was not having a good time. 

“Eating isn’t really enjoyable these days,” Bosa said, per ESPN. “It’s more so just part of the job.”

The defensive end stands at 6’5” and played at 250 pounds last year, down from his typical weight of between 265-270 pounds. During his playing days at Ohio State, he weighed 280 pounds and Bosa felt the need to get closer to that mark this year. 

“I specifically tried to really eat good and put some weight on this offseason, get back to my weight I was at a few years ago, where I could really use my power,” Bosa explained after a training camp practice. “Really handle guys in the run and be more effective in that part of the game.”

Bosa spent 12 games on injured reserve last year due to a groin surgery and is looking to make a major comeback on the field where, when healthy, he’s considered to be one of the best pass rushers in football. To get there, he’s going to continue to scarf down those calories.
