Phil Mickelson Shares Bold Take on Why a PGA Tour vs. LIV Event Isn’t Happening

The battle between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is becoming more contentious by the day, and for that reason, many fans have suggested the rival leagues face off in a Ryder Cup-style match

Phil Mickelson, however, thinks he knows why the head-to-head event isn’t going to happen just yet.

Mickelson—who joined the controversial Saudi-backed circuit in June—took to Twitter on Thursday to respond with his thoughts on the prospect of such a competition.

Phil made his opinion known after one Twitter user called for a LIV vs. PGA Tour match play event with “Phil and Tiger as captains,” and wrote that it would be the “most watched golf event in history.”

Danny Woodhead, a retired NFL running back turned accomplished amateur golfer, retweeted the comment and added, “Easily! And I’m here for it!”

Mickelson, who has been taking to Twitter to respond to fans more frequently as of late, saw his opportunity to weigh in on the highly requested match.

“It sounds great, but we would dominate them so soundly and it would be over so quick that tv would have to fill an hour of dead time. That’s why it’s not happening at this time,” he said.

Mickelson is a known trash talker, and considering his history with Capital One’s The Match, the tweet could be the two-time Masters champion’s attempt to lay some groundwork for the organization of a future event. Or, more likely, the comment will get lost among the rest of Mickelson’s recent flood of Twitter activity.

If a PGA Tour vs. LIV Ryder Cup-style match ever did materialize, lineups would likely include players like Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Talor Gooch and Brooks Koepka on the LIV side. The PGA Tour’s team, on the other hand, could be highlighted by top-ranked players such as Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele
