Yesterday the Angels surprised the baseball world when they fired well regarded pitching coach Mike Maddux along with two other pitching coaches. Brought in from the Texas Rangers prior to the 2026 season, Maddux has a reputation for helping pitchers fulfill their upsides and was instrumental in Jose Soriano's improvement.

This was not the first time Mike Maddux and newly appointed Angels GM John Mozeliak had worked together. Nor is it the first time Maddux and Mozeliak have parted ways. In St. Louis the decision was made by Maddux. In Anaheim, Mozeliak made the call.

Why Did the Angels Fire Mike Maddux?

At his press conference prior to Tuesday night's game, Mozeliak stated the move was made because Maddux and his staff did not use the analytical resources the team provided.

"There was just this undercurrent of trying to get ourselves to be using all the different tools that you see a lot of pitchers use today," explained Mozeliak. He went on to say the Angels plan is "just really try to leverage that in how we help players grow."

Front office staffers felt as though they were giving the pitching coaches valuable information that was being ignored. Frustration grew as the losses mounted and the Angels pitching cratered. Currently the team leads of of MLB in walks allowed and has the 28th ranked ERA.

"There were some things that we discussed that we thought maybe could be utilized, and I don't know if it was truly being taken advantage of," Mozeliak stated.

Who is Tim Leveque? Connecting the Dots Between Anaheim and St. Louis

Leveque originally joined the St. Louis organization in 2006 to coordinate video tracking for draft-eligible pitchers. Over the next 20 years, he climbed the ranks as a minor league pitching coach and scout within the system. There is nobody more versed in the Cardinal Way of pitching and Leveque.

Hired prior to the 2026 season as the pitching coach for the Double-A , Leveque revolutionized their staff. Under his guidance, Rocket City posted a spectacular 4.01 ERA over an 81-game stretch—tied for the best mark in all of Double-A baseball. The bullpen saw the biggest boost, improving their collective ERA from 5.38 down to 3.68 with a minor-league-leading 29.6% strikeout rate.

Leveque embraces modern pitch tracking and pitch design innovations. He loves using analytics and match up data. In short, he is very much in line with the way Mozeliak wants to reshape the Angels. In listening to Mozeliak speak about Leveque, his admiration is obvious.

"He’s a smart guy who really understands where the game is at," stated Mozeliak, referencing the use of data. "And I think he’ll be a good resource."

The late season dismissal of Mike Maddux makes one thing clear: John Mozeliak is not acting like a passive, temporary general manager.
