Astros’ Probable Starting Pitchers Revealed for Mariners Series

The Houston Astros rebounded nicely after losing the series on the road against the San Diego Padres by taking the series against the San Francisco Giants. Now, the Astros are heading back to Houston, set to get an important series started against a big AL West rival.

The Seattle Mariners might not be the best team in the division by record, having lost a handful of games in a row and falling behind in the division race, but if you're the Astros, you don't mind that at all.

However, the Mariners are still a team on paper that should perform better than they have, so Houston can't take them lightly. That's apparent in who the Astros are sending to the mound to start each game of the series, as they look to secure back-to-back series victories.

Game 1 - Peter Lambert

Taking the mound on Friday will be Peter Lambert, who has had a strong first season with Houston. Entering the start, Lambert holds a 3.38 ERA in the month of August and a 3.09 ERA for the season.

In back-to-back starts, Lambert has pitched in five innings or more, and that will likely be the task he's asked of in the series opener. Keeping the ball in the ballpark will also be something to watch, given he allowed one long ball in his recent start and 12 on the season.

Lambert struggled to strike out the Padres in his last outing, collecting three in five innings of work. On the season, Seattle hitters have struck out a decent number of times, having punched out 1,022 times before their series finale against the New York Yankees.

Game 2 - Hayden Wesneski

Hayden Wesneski will take the ball for game two, making just his fourth start of the season. His first three starts have been strong, collecting 18.2 innings with a 3.86 ERA and 12 strikeouts.

Similar to Lambert, Wesneski needs to keep the ball in the ballpark, having allowed two home runs to the Giants last time out. For a pitching staff that needed depth, getting Wesneski down the stretch is massive for Houston, looking to get back into the playoffs.

Game 3 - Hunter Brown

Surprisingly, Hunter Brown's recent numbers haven't reflected the kind of pitcher he is at all. In three straight starts, Brown has allowed three home runs, one home run per game. He still holds an impressive ERA (3.68) but has been hit hard this month through two starts, posting a 4.91 ERA in 11 innings.

Getting Brown back on track shouldn't be difficult, as he notoriously pitches well in front of Astro fans in Houston. In his last start at Daikin Park, he struck out eight hitters in six innings but allowed three runs in the process.
