Brewers' William Contreras Refuses to Panic Amid Second-Half Slump

The Milwaukee Brewers need some more pop in the middle of the order if they want to make a run this season.

Unfortunately, with the trade deadline behind us now, there isn't going to be some external option coming in to save the day. If the Brewers are going to find more power in the middle of the order, it's going to either mean that guys on the big league roster get hot, or Milwaukee finds an internal piece down in the minors to help.

On the big league roster right now, the guys who could help in this department are William Contreras and Christian Yelich, but both have been struggling offensively recently. Since the All-Star break, Contreras has been slashing .179/.273/.333 with a .606 OPS, two home runs and six RBIs in 21 games played. Over his last eight games, he has slashed .138/.265/.241 with one home run. Things aren't clicking for him right now after earning his third career All-Star nod this summer. But he didn't shy away from the fact and opened up about what he has to do to get back on track.

"Keep going," Contreras said, as transcribed by Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Keep doing what I do. Keep working harder...That’s baseball. That’s the game. You’re going to be in good moments, bad moments. Some days you’re going to be in a slump, a big slump."

When Contreras is rolling, he can be a solution for this offense. Overall this season, he's slashing .263/.331/.386 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs in 110 games. At the All-Star break, he was slashing .282/.344/.398 with nine homers and 53 RBIs in 89 games played. Milwaukee needs that version of him back if it wants to make a run this season.

Again, there isn't a big external bat coming. That ship has sailed. There are a few intriguing sluggers down in the minors, but the Brewers need their veterans to step up in the middle of the order and that starts with Contreras and Yelich. When they're rolling, they have plenty of pop. But, again, that hasn't been the case for a bit. Since the All-Star break, Yelich is slashing .203/.277/.378 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 20 games played.

Milwaukee needs these two to get it going if it wants to make a deep run this season. Contreras said all of the right things. Now, it's about getting back on track.
