Guardians Take Down Tigers 6-4 as American League Central Race Heats Up

It's about time the Cleveland Guardians won a game.

Now, the boys have got to string this into something special and start chasing the Chicago White Sox for the top spot in the American League Central.

On Wednesday, August 12, the Guardians took down the Detroit Tigers on the road from Comerica Park, 6-4. After struggling to put together consistent, reliable pitching along with offensive production on Tuesday, the team put past issues behind them. Producing over 10 hits and five walks, all while limiting the Tigers to just one earned run.

The victory puts the series at 1-1, with the series finale coming on Thursday.

Before the two sides squared away in game two of the series, manager Stephen Vogt shared that the team was trending in the right direction and just needed to catch a break with runners in scoring position.

“I mean, we're like I've been saying, we're doing a lot of things really well," Vogt said after Tuesday's loss. "It seems to be the runner's scoring position that continues to give us fits, and we're working. We're working on it.

"We're working on being more middle-of-the-field oriented in those situations, and we're going to continue to work. And I know we're going to get better.”

Well, that break finally came.

The Guardians not only produced a high volume of hits and walks, but capitalized on those opportunities, going 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Leading the charge for the team was veteran outfielder Steven Kwan, who went 1-for-3 at the plate with two walks drawn. He also scored once. Alongside Kwan, veteran catcher Austin Hedges got on the bags four times, producing one RBI hit and logging three walks, which is a new career-best.

Seeing two of Cleveland's leaders not just continue to help guide the team behind the scenes, but also put out production at the plate, helps the team build momentum.

The Guardians have been looking for guys to step up and fill those voids offensively the last few days.

Recently acquired outfielder Jo Adell, who joined the team from the Los Angeles Angels at the deadline, ended up putting his footprint on the outing. He smacked a go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning, giving the team a 4-3 advantage.

All while the offense held the Tigers on their heels, the pitching staff was controlling the contest on the mound.

Starting pitcher Foster Griffin pitched through five frames, striking out three while allowing just four hits, three runs, one earned run and one walk. After struggling in his debut last week against the New York Mets, his performance Wednesday allowed the Cleveland faithful to take a breath.

Griffin didn't do it all himself, though, as Colin Holderman, Erik Sabrowski and Hunter Gaddis all put in strong relief innings. Gaddis was the lone reliever to give up a run, finishing with one hit, one run and two walks allowed in 0.2 innings of work.

All-Star closer Cade Smith finished the job, relieving Gaddis, wrapping up the eighth inning and then shutting out the Tigers in the ninth. He ended up logging his 31st save of the 2026 campaign with two hits allowed and three strikeouts.

While there is still work to be done to show that this wasn't just a one-game-wonder, the Guardians continue to show that they are a competitive baseball team. When everyone is contributing, both those at the plate and the arms on the mound, that GuardsBall-style of play can be unlocked.
