Foster Griffin Poised to Bounce Back Following Disastrous Debut Against Mets

The Cleveland Guardians made a big trade to land Foster, a 2026 MLB All-Star, at the deadline. Now, he just has to show the organization what he's got in the tank on Wednesday.

Foster Griffin's debut with the Cleveland Guardians wasn't too hot.

For just the fourth time this season, second in the last 13 games, the left-handed starter allowed five or more runs in a start on the bump. Against the New York Mets at Progressive Field, Griffin allowed seven hits, two walks and five earned runs across 4.0 innings of work.

It was the first time he had exited a contest that early this year.

But fortunately, the newly acquired Guardian will get a chance to return right back to the form that made him an All-Star selection just a few weeks back.

On Wednesday, August 12, the Guardians will take on the Detroit Tigers for the second outing of a three-game set. Griffin, as of early afternoon, is set to get the start for Cleveland.

While the pressure is on Griffin to bounce back from his rocky debut, there is also tremendous weight sitting on his shoulders to win. The Guardians dropped Tuesday night's game, 6-4, and if they lose Wednesday, it would be the 15th loss in the last 19 games and the fourth straight series loss.

When the front office went out to acquire him at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline from the Washington Nationals, the hope was that he'd help strengthen the starting rotation, rounding it out ahead of the postseason.

Across his first 22 starts of the season, the 31-year-old pitched a 3.06 ERA with a whopping 116 strikeouts and just 30 walks allowed. He also gave up just 44 runs across 129.1 innings of work. Not necessarily a strikeout-heavy pitcher in the past, he has made great strides this season to become a dynamic pitcher with a deep arsenal.

Against a surging Tigers squad that is attempting to knock the Guardians further down the American League Central standings, Griffin is going to have to flex that versatility to change pitches on the fly.

On the year, he has thrown nearly 700 cutters, 350 four-seamers, 310 sweepers, 222 sinkers, 220 changeups, 215 curveballs and more than 100 splitters. His ability to keep batters on their toes has been crucial to pitching deep into games, as hitters can't easily settle in and anticipate what pitch is coming next.

Veteran catcher Austin Hedges, who has worked with countless pitchers throughout his career, focused on that part of Griffin's game. He said that's what makes him so excited to work with him as 2026 dwindles to a close.

“I love guys that can pitch,” Hedges said in an article on MLB.com. “It’s kind of a lost art in this sport. This league's about stuff now and velocity, and he's shown the world that you can still pitch with different shapes and movement and execution...”

“...A lot of times you look at a scouting report, and it's like, ‘Oh, well, my pitcher doesn't have this pitch.' Well, when your pitcher does have that pitch, you can exploit a hitter's weakness a little bit more if you have that weapon. It just gives us more options to have some fun with.”

Fortunately, while he didn't get to be behind the dish in his debut, Hedges and Griffin will get to play catch on Wednesday night.

The two will square away against the Tigers from Comerica Park with game-time set for 6:40 p.m. EST.

With a chance to put the Cleveland faithful on notice and regain some of that trust lost last week, all eyes will be on Cleveland's newest addition to the rotation.
