The Guardians Could Re-Sign This Trade Deadline Acquisition to Mentor Top First Base Prospect

In this story:
The Cleveland Guardians' first base position in the 2026 postseason featured four players. Prior to the start of the season, Rhys Hoskins was acquired in an attempt to solidify the position with a consistent power bat; however, Hoskins simply could not provide that. In 95 games this season, he hit just .179 with a .682 OPS.
Kyle Manzardo split time with Hoskins throughout the season but also failed to heat up offensively, and was optioned to AAA Columbus on June 18, where he spent the rest of the season. KJ Kayfus had two brief stints with the club, appearing in nine games over the course of the season, where he batted .182.
Chris Antonetti and his team identified a hole in the Guardians' lineup ahead of the trade deadline and made a deal with the Cincinnati Reds, sending veteran Nathaniel Lowe to Cleveland in exchange for RHP Alejandro Rivera and INF Juan Brito.

Up to that point in the season, Lowe hit .266 with the Reds, hitting 12 home runs and driving in 37 runs. The Guardians' initial plan was to play Lowe against right-handed pitchers while Hoskins would face the lefties, but Lowe would take over as the every-day starter when Hoskins was placed on the IR in August.
Lowe made an impact late in the season and in the Guardians' postseason run. Despite the team's systemic offensive struggles in the postseason, Lowe provided some stability. He hit .243, tallying 9 hits and 5 RBIs in October.

Lowe will be a free agent this offseason, and the Guardians have a strong case for signing him to help a prospect develop. Ralphy Valazquez is a top Guardians first baseman prospect and could benefit from learning from Lowe.

Ralphy Velazquez hit .290/.379/.548 with 29 HR this year. The first baseman could provide a much-needed source of power to a…
Valazquez is the top prospect on the Guardians Pipeline Top 30 list and is expected to join the major-league club in 2027. In his season with Columbus, Valezquez hit .278, hit 22 home runs, and drove in 63 runs in 85 games.
Undoubtedly, the Guardians' 2023 first-round draft pick has the raw talent to become a power bat in MLB, but that won't happen overnight. With Nathaniel Lowe on the club in 2027, Valazquez would have time to adjust to major-league pitching without being overworked right away.

Lowe's presence would also give Kyle Manzardo extra time to warm up early in the season in Columbus. Manzardo has shown flashes of his potential in three seasons but struggled in 2026. Ideally, Manzardo and Valazquez would be dynamic power DH/first-base assets for the Guardians in years to come, but with Lowe's mentorship, they could have the time to fully blossom.
Signing Lowe to a short-term deal could be an investment worth the money for the Guardians over the offseason.
