New York Mets to Shut Down Jose Quintana for 3 Months

A big loss for the Mets' rotation.

According to Mike Puma of The New York Post, the Mets are planning to shut down starter Jose Quintana from throwing for three months.

Quintana underwent tests last week, which revealed a stress fracture on the fifth rib of his left side.

Given the timeline, the earliest Quintana will be able to start ramping up is in mid-June, meaning his return could come around the All-Star break. Quintana will likely miss most of, if not all, of the first half of the regular season.

The Mets signed the 34-year-old to a two-year, $26 million deal back in December.

Quintana was forced to remove himself from participating in the World Baseball Classic for Team Colombia. The lefty made one Grapefruit League start and pitched in a minor league exhibition game before getting hurt.

With Quintana out, David Peterson or Tylor Megill will likely replace him in the Mets' rotation.

As Puma also reported, Mets officials are intrigued about giving Megill the spot in the rotation.

Peterson pitched to a solid 3.83 ERA in 28 appearances (19 starts) a season ago. Megill had a 1.93 ERA in his first five starts last year before injuries derailed his campaign.
