New York Mets' Legend Recovering After Heart Attack

It has been a life filled with adversity for this New York Mets' legend.

Now, 1986 World Series Champion Darryl Strawberry has another major obstacle to overcome.

Late Monday night, Strawberry took to social media to reveal that he suffered a heart attack, but is luckily in good spirits and is recovering at the hospital.

Strawberry wrote on Instagram:

"Praising God for His amazing grace and loving mercy in saving my life this evening from a heart attack. I am so happy and honored to report that all is well. So thankful for the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West in Lake St. Louis for responding so quickly and bringing me through a stent-procedure that has brought my heart to total restoration!!! Your prayers are so absolutely appreciated as I continue to recover, in Jesus Name!"

Strawberry was recently serving his annual duty as a guest instructor at Mets' spring training in Port St. Lucie a few weeks ago.

The Mets' Hall of Famer, who is scheduled to have his No. 18 retired by the club on June 1 of this season, also turns 62-year-old on Tuesday (today), so this major health issue is poor timing. Fortunately, he received the necessary care required to save his life and is now already on the road to recovery.

It has been a lifelong struggle for Strawberry, who dealt with substance abuse issues throughout his career and beyond, which landed him in and out of rehab facilities. However, he cleaned himself up several decades ago and turned his entire life around, leading to his desire to help others that are dealing with similar problems.

Strawberry was an 8-time All-Star for the Mets and helped them capture their most recent World Series title in '86. He is also the franchise's home run record holder with 252 long balls, though Pete Alonso might surpass this title if he signs a long-term deal to stick in Queens after the 2024 season expires.

It's no secret that Strawberry is an important part of the Mets' organization as well as the team's history. He survived a heart attack the day before he turned 62 because he is a fighter, which is why he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
