New York Mets Talking To Superstar Slugger, Not Close To Deal

The New York Mets aren't calling it quits on adding to their roster just yet.

As Mike Puma of The New York Post reported earlier on Wednesday, the Mets are engaged in talks with the representatives of star free agent designated hitter J.D. Martinez.

However, as SNY insider Andy Martino later revealed, discussions between the Mets and Martinez are nowhere near the finish line to this point.

But the dilemma is that Martinez is coming off a monster All-Star campaign for the Los Angeles Dodgers, so he is set to be paid handsomely.

As Martino pointed out, the Mets are already pushing past their desired payroll for 2024, and are facing an 110 percent luxury tax bill on every dollar spent.

While Steve Cohen has made surprising moves in the past, so it can't be ruled out, the Mets appear to be ready to see what they have in Mark Vientos as their everyday DH, as well as giving Starling Marte some relief at that spot as he is coming off an injury plagued season.

If the Mets are unable to land Martinez, which still looks to be unlikely at this point unless his price tag dramatically drops, two names that make sense and fit the team's budget are Gio Urshela and Brandon Belt. Urshela is a name that the Mets have continued to show interest in. He also provides insurance at third base in case Brett Baty struggles again, and brings gold glove caliber defense and a serviceable bat.
