The San Diego Padres optioned right-hander Ron Marinaccio to Triple-A and DFA'd utility man Tyler Wade on Friday.

The Padres need to make room for their many trade deadline additions, and started Thursday night, designating two players for assignment while optioning another.

Wade has been with the Padres since 2024, signing a minor league contract before featuring 90 times during the regular season last year. He played in 60 games this season, slashing .206/.309/.252 with no home runs and nine RBIs.

Marinaccio came to the Padres after 2024, when received him from the White Sox for cash considerations. He made just two appearances for the Friars, though he kept 2.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

Their moves opened five spots on the roster, allowing them to activate all of their new arrivals bar Nestor Cortes. Mason Miller will serve as a direct replacement for Marinaccio, and the presence of Ryan O'Hearn and Gavin Sheets at designated hitter with Ramon Laureano taking over in the outfield brings more stability to the Padres infield, as they won't have everyday position players DHing.

The Padres also activated JP Sears and Freddy Fermin, who will be valuable additions to a deep rotation and a position which has lacked offense for the Padres, respectively.

Their deadline deals as well as their roster overhaul show the Padres mean business, and could very well close the gap between themselves and the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who they will face twice in August.

They get the chance to showcase their new talent in their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday at 6:40 p.m. PT.
