The work of rehabilitating an injury can be a grind, especially when the player knows the regular season is over.

Thus, per the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Philadelphia Phillies opted to take a guest with them when they went to Cleveland this weekend — first baseman Rhys Hoskins.

No, Hoskins can’t play. He’s still rehabilitating the torn ACL that ended his season before it even started. But, the Phillies felt Hoskins just needed a break from the daily work of rehabbing the injury. He’s also at a point in his recovery when he can travel with the team and continue his rehab work on the road.

From the sounds of Hoskins’ comments to the Inquirer, he needed the trip.

“I think in the rehab process, especially while the season is going on, you can feel like you’re blending into the background,” Hoskins said. “But being around, and good people being good people, makes a difference.”

It’s not the only time that Hoskins will be on the road with the Phillies, either. He intends to make the team’s remaining road trips, starting with their visit to Pittsburgh this weekend.

Hoskins injured the knee in late March during Spring Training and was moved to the 60-day injured list. He’s been ruled out for the regular season, but he hasn’t been totally ruled out for the postseason.

Without Hoskins, the Phillies have cobbled together a strategy at first base that includes Alec Bohm, Kody Clemens (now at Triple-A) and even Bryce Harper, who made his first career start at the position on Friday as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

The Phillies host the Orioles starting on Monday.
