Carlos Correa Out For World Baseball Classic

Carlos Correa will sit out the WBC to focus on Twins training camp and the birth of his second child.

After a tumultuous off season as a free agent, Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa will not play in the World Baseball Classic next month.

The reasons, however, appear to have nothing to do with the ankle that caused two different contract agreements to fall through. It has to do with the impending arrival of his child.

Correa’s wife, Daniella, is expected to deliver their second child the day after Puerto Rico starts pool play in Miami in the WBC, per The Athletic. To avoid Correa having to negotiate both, he and Puerto Rico mutually agreed to have him not play.

The Twins reportedly weren’t wild with Correa trying to work through his wife’s delivery, the WBC and Spring Training, and he agreed.

Correa had an offseason for the books, one that saw him ultimately return to the Twins after signing a six-year, $200 million deal.

But Correa was poised to break the bank — twice.

He first agreed to a 13-year, $350 million agreement with the San Francisco Giants. Shortly after that deal fell through, he agreed to a 12-year, $315 million agreement with the New York Mets.

Both deals fell through over concerns about Correa’s surgically repaired ankle, the result of an injury he suffered early in his career when he was with the Houston Astros.
