Red Sox's Absurd 2026 Turnaround Takes Another Turn

In this story:
The Boston Red Sox were among the worst overall teams in the standings across the first few months of the 2026 season.
That was until near the end of June, and then things shifted. The Red Sox have put together one of the most stunning turnarounds you're ever going to see in a Major League Baseball season. On Saturday, Boston reached another impressive threshold.
The Red Sox came back in the ninth inning and walked off the San Francisco Giants. In the process, they became just the third club in the American League to reach 70 wins on the season. Now, Boston is 70-59. The Tampa Bay Rays are leading the American League with a 76-53 record and the New York Yankees have the second-best record in the American League at 73-56.
The Red Sox Have Been Shocking

On June 24, the Red Sox were 32-46 on the season and spiraling out of control. Now, the Red Sox are just three games behind the Yankees for second place in the American League East. Boston is just six games behind the Rays right now in the standings as well. The shocking thing is that the top spot in the American League East is still up for grabs, especially with Boston and Tampa Bay having another series this season against one another.
Teams like the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Guardians have been in playoff contention all season. While this is the case, the Red Sox have blown by them in the standings. The White Sox have a 67-62 record, while the Guardians have a 64-66 record. In the American League West, the Houston Astros are leading the division at 65-65 with the Texas Rangers a game back at 64-66.
What Boston has been able to do this season is absurd. They have pulled themselves up from the basement of the American League and have moved past pretty much everyone in the standings. If someone had said back in June that Boston would be the third American League team to reach 70 wins, no one would have believed them.
And what should be scary for opposing teams is the fact that Boston is just going to get better. Roman Anthony and Trevor Story are close to a return, along with Isiah Kiner-Falefa. This team is just getting more and more dangerous. Right now, the Red Sox are three games behind New York and six games behind Tampa Bay. Don't be surprised if those gaps close as well.
