Rockies' Jake McCarthy Has Hilarious Comment After Winning NL Player of Week

The Rockies outfielder absolutely shined in his latest week of play.

The Colorado Rockies lost their most recent series on the road to the St. Louis Cardinals as the Cardinals were the better team. But there was some good news to come out of the series loss.

Outfielder Jake McCarthy was named the National League Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 3. as he was on an absolute heater. The fact that McCarthy hit .514 for the week at the plate, speaks a lot to how he was hitting any pitch and every pitch that was coming his way.

And manager Warren Schaeffer having McCarthy hitting leadoff ahead of guys like Cole Carigg, TJ Rumfield, and Hunter Goodman, speaks to McCarthy being in the correct spot in the batting order. And McCarthy commented on the award that he won and Rockies fans should find it hilarious.

"I didn't even know they had that award," McCarthy said to reporters, including USA Today.

McCarthy's Breakthrough Season Only Grows

McCarthy not even knowing that players of the week awards even exist speaks to how locked in McCarthy is with baseball and how he shuts out outside noise. McCarthy is one of those players that the Rockies can count on to find consistency at the plate and should be their leadoff hitter for a while.

McCarthy was getting interest from teams ahead of the MLB trade deadline, but the Rockies chose to hold on to him. McCarthy would have been a perfect fit for contending teams, but knowing he stayed, shows the coaching staff has a lot of trust in him.

It seems like a lot of the baseballs that McCarthy has been hitting all season, have turned to gold with how good his slashline is. McCarthy is currently slashing .306/.342/.518 which is good for an OPS of .860.

McCarthy is one of those guys that has been swinging a hot bat all season and has not cooled down. And the fact that he won NL Player of the Week shows how he just keeps on hitting and the moment does not get too big for him.

McCarthy is only 29 years old so he still has some years left and could be with the Rockies for the rest of his career if he so chooses. He could also help be a mentor for the younger Rockies in the organization looking to make their come up sometime soon.

He has been impressive to Schaeffer and staff for the whole entire season. He will only keep getting awards as his career continues.
