The Chicago White Sox will give Ozzie Guillén the highest honor later this season.

During their home opener on Friday, the franchise announced that former player and manager will officially have his iconic No. 13 retired. Fittingly, he will be only the 13th player in franchise history to receive the honor, as well as the club's first manager.

The event is currently scheduled for August 8, when the White Sox will welcome the Cleveland Guardians to Guaranteed Rate Field. They will hold the special tribute to Guillén before first pitch at 6:10 p.m. CT.

Guillén played for the White Sox for 13 seasons, winning Rookie of the Year in 1985 before going on to make three All-Star appearances. He continued to make history with the organization after returning to take over as manager in 2004. In his second season, he led the Sox to a 99-63 season and a stunning World Series sweep of the Houston Astros.

Guillén would serve as manager until 2011, when the team went 78-82. The two sides eventually moved on from one another as some tension with the front office loomed. Guillén proceeded to coach the Marlins for one season before he was fired.

The franchise favorite has gone on to become a broadcasting staple in Chicago. He has worked for both NBC Sports Chicago and Chicago Sports Network as an analyst for Sox coverage, and Guillén was on duty when he learned of the honor on Friday.

White Sox Surprise Ozzie Guillén ...

Scott Podsednik joined the Chicago Sports Network broadcast live from The Rate on Friday to help break the news. Ozzie Guillén had no idea it was coming, leading to a very emotional moment between him, his former player, his wife, and the White Sox faithful.

"Wow. I don't know how to react, how to say thank you to the White Sox organization. Wow ... I can die on August 9th now. My god," Guillen joked.

As Guillén fought back tears, the crowd began to chant his name. The White Sox were quick to share the moment over social media:

For Guillén, this kind of acknowledgement always felt like a matter of when not if. He has been embedded in the history of the South Side team since the 80s and has helped them reach some of their highest peaks. There is no doubt August 8 will be a day to remember at The Rate, and possibly a much-needed celebration during another trying season.
