Whether the results of ace starting pitcher Gerrit Cole's MRI on his right elbow come back clean, mild, moderate or severe, the New York Yankees need pitching help says this MLB insider.

Jon Heyman of The New York Post released an article that ran through the X's and O's of why the Yankees are still unlikely to sign reigning NL Cy Young winning lefty Blake Snell, despite Cole's status being up in the air for now.

As a result, Heyman suggested that if Snell signs with his hometown Seattle Mariners, who are viewed as a fit for the ace, the Yankees could trade for one of Seattle's top young starters. However, as was cautioned in the story, a trade like that would likely be costly in the form of the Yankees being forced to trade top outfield prospect Spencer Jones.

The Yankees were deep in talks with the Milwaukee Brewers about Cy Young righty ace Corbin Burnes this past winter, but pulled out after Milwaukee asked for Jones. The Yankees did not want to sacrifice their long-term future in exchange for one-year of Burnes, no matter how great he is, where anything can happen via injuries or underperformance.

The Yankees did the right thing initially by keeping Jones, but they might be left with no choice but to make the impulsive, aggressive move and give up a potential star in order to remain on their trajectory of making it to the World Series in 2024 with superstar Juan Soto hitting free agency after the season.
