The New York Yankees are eyeing the St. Louis Cardinals as a potential trade partner this offseason.

According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold:

"The Yankees see the Cardinals as a team they could line up with for a trade, according to multiple sources. It is not clear if the Yankees’ interest in (Dylan) Carlson has followed them into the offseason -- Carlson is in the Phoenix area recovering from foot surgery -- but, according to sources, two left-handed-hitting Cardinals have at least been discussed by the Yankees as potential targets: Brendan Donovan and Alec Burleson, both of whom are pre-arbitration players and both of whom are coming off injuries."

The Yankees and Cardinals discussed a trade for Carlson at last season's trade deadline. St. Louis is said to be interested in major league reliever Ron Marinaccio and minor league pitcher Clayton Beeter.

The top player, who the Yankees could target is Donovan, a productive offensive player that provides defensive versatility and has won a Gold Glove. Donovan is under control through 2027, which means his price tag likely won't be cheap.

As Yankees general manager Brian Cashman revealed at GM meetings, the team is looking to add two left-handed hitting outfielders. The Cardinals have a plethora of left-handed hitting outfielders, and all three names mentioned: Carlson (switch hitter), Donovan and Burleson fit this bill.

The Cardinals are looking to trade some of their position players in return for pitching.

The Yankees and Cardinals already talked at the trade deadline, and it appears that they will do so again this winter.
