On Friday afternoon, the Philadelphia 76ers honored one of the top players in franchise history. Former MVP Allen Iverson was presented with a statue outside the team’s training complex in Camden.

Following the ceremony, Iverson had his own media availability. Among the things to come up was the Sixers’ current lead guard, Tyrese Maxey. Iverson said Maxey is one of his favorite players and cited the increase in his confidence level this year.

“He’s bigger, he’s stronger. Obviously, I see the confidence level,” Iverson said, per Sam DiGiovanni of Clutch Points. “The confidence in himself and knowing he can do it. And then he put in the work to become the Tyrese Maxey that he is now. I love watching him play, I cheer for him.”

Thrust even into a bigger role this year, Maxey has emerged as one of the top young guards in the league. This season, he is averaging 25.9 PPG, 3.7 RPG, and 6.3 APG. These numbers not only landed him an All-Star nomination, but have him in the conversation for the Most Improved Player award.

Maxey had one of his biggest performances of the year over the weekend against the San Antonio Spurs. He erupted for a career-high 52 points in the double-overtime thriller. This put him in elite company as one of three players to have at least three 50-point games this season. The other players are Joel Embiid and Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker.

Throughout this season, many people have sung Maxey’s praises for his breakout campaign. Based on Iverson’s recent comments, the Hall of Fame guard is one of the many people to take notice of his heightened play.
