Dalen Terry should be ready to step up for the Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have a lot to think about during this offseason. From negotiations with free agents Nikola Vucevic and Coby White to the team’s clear lack of outside shooting, the franchise’s decision-makers have their work cut out for them. However, the Bulls’ most pressing need lies at the point guard position.

This season, Ayo Dosunmu handled most of the guard duties to mixed results. Towards the tail-end of the season, veteran Pat Beverley took over and helped lead the Bulls to the Play-in Tournament. But with Beverley aiming for a big payday, he may have priced himself out of the Bulls’ plans. The team, though, has another young guard who may be ready to take the reins.

Ready to step up

It will be a long offseason, and a lot can still change. However, if the Bulls decide to stay within their current roster, Terry could be in line for a larger role. Keith Smith of Spotrac recently wrote an offseason preview of the Bulls and mentioned that Terry has the talent and the skills to take on a much larger role for the team next season.

“Dalen Terry’s rookie season was mostly spent watching,” Smith wrote. “He rarely played meaningful NBA minutes. In the G League, Terry flashed the ability that made him a mid-first-round pick. There’s talent there, and Terry should be ready to take on a bigger role.”

Played well in the G League

Terry was selected 18th overall by the Bulls in the first round of this season’s NBA Draft. Unlike most first-round picks, though, the Arizona star spent most of this time on the bench and in the G League, training and occasionally playing for the Windy City Bulls.

The talent is certainly there for the athletic, 6-foot-7 guard, as he averaged 19.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game in his three games in the G League. The question is: can he put it all together? After all, the point guard position is the most demanding in basketball, and success in the G League isn’t a sure-fire indication that a player will make it at the highest level.
