Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell Eliminated In Three-Point Contest’s First Round

The Cleveland guard scored 21 of a possible 40 points in the first round of the 2024 NBA Starry Three-Point Contest on Saturday night.

The Cleveland Cavaliers had one representative during 2024 NBA State Farm All-Star Saturday Night.

Donovan Mitchell competed in the Starry Three-Point Contest, seeking to become the third player in Cavaliers history to win the event.

Unfortunately, he was eliminated in the first round of the competition after posting a score of 21 points.

Mitchell was the second of eight contestants to shoot, following a 26-point performance from Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young.

The Cleveland guard, who was sporting a “Money Merrill” jersey in support of teammate Sam Merrill, began his round in the left corner, sinking a pair of one-point shots. Mitchell’s next rack on the left wing was his “money rack,” in which each ball was worth two points. He made his first two shots, but missed his next three.

After missing his first Starry three-point shot, he had his best performance at the top of the key. Mitchell missed his first shot, but then made his ensuing four, including the two-point “money ball.” He then made a Starry three-point shot to give himself 14 points.

After this, Mitchell made two of four one-point shots and his “money ball” from the right wing for four more points. Finally, he made three one-point shots from the right corner to end his round with 21 of a possible 40 points.

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton proceeded to put Mitchell on the brink of elimination after tying Young’s 26-point output. However, the Cavaliers star remained in contention after Milwaukee Bucks guard Malik Beasley scored 20 points.

Finally, Minnesota Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns also posted 26 points, which officially eliminated Mitchell from the competition.

But Mitchell’s weekend is not over yet, as he will be competing in the 73rd NBA All-Star Game tomorrow night at 8 p.m.
