Shaquille O'Neal drew cheers earlier this week when referred to Angel Reese as the greatest athlete in LSU sports history.

O'Neal, who helped lead the Miami Heat to their first NBA title in 2006, said he was that impressed with Reese after she led LSU past Iowa in the NCAA women's basketball championship game.

She's probably the greatest athlete to come out LSU sports," O'Neal said on his "The Big Podcast." "You heard it here first, male and female."

O'Neal, who played at LSU, included himself in the competitors. He based it on Reese winning a title. There have been plenty talented athletes at LSU, including Joe Burrow, O'Neal, Chris Jackson and Patrick Peterson. Burrow led the football team to a national title.

"Guess what? She delivered that package," O'Neal said, referring to an NCAA championship. A lot of us got the package and we still got the package in our truck. She delivered that package. It's a lot of names you can throw around, men and women. Some people are going to exclude it to women's athletes. I'm not doing that. She's the greatest athlete to ever come out of LSU. Joe Burrow got it done a couple years ago but she's way more athletic than he is."

O'Neal's comments set off talk-show host Jason Whitlock, who felt Reese only gained fame because of her trash-talking Iowa guard Caitlin Clark in the closing seconds. He responded to O'Neal on his "Fearless" podcast.

"Everybody is doing this worship of women," Whitlock said. "No one can remember, if you ask somebody, `Hey, tell me a basket she made? What's her highlight play?' She scored a handful of put-backs ... You can't remember a shot she made."'
