Lakers’ JJ Redick Addresses Viral Sideline Exchange With Luka Doncic

During the Los Angeles Lakers’ 129-101 blowout win over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night, a clip went viral of a moment on the sideline between head coach JJ Redick and star point guard Luka Doncic.

It was an intense verbal exchange in which Redick was clearly frustrated with Doncic, who then walked toward the bench after being subbed out of the game and seemed equally upset with his head coach.

Jarred Vanderbilt was also seen quickly stepping in to help calm Doncic down, preventing it from escalating further. The situation quickly dissipated, but there was enough there to draw plenty of attention on social media over the last couple of days.

Before Tuesday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Redick atoned to just that sentiment.

"I didn't think much of it at the time, to be honest with you," Redick said. "I don't think Luka did either. He and I have a great relationship. I really value our relationship. And I think those things happen. Not every game, but they happen very frequently. And sometimes you have to rehash them with a player, or as a teammate. Sometimes it happens player to player.

"It's a competition. And there's two guys here who, in this case, are trying to win a basketball game and be on the same page about stuff."

The Lakers are moving through the final quarter of the regular season, hoping to secure a top-six playoff seed in order to avoid the play-in tournament altogether. Los Angeles currently sits in the sixth seed in the Western Conference standings.

They have struggled to break through to make a strong push for a higher seeding, but the opportunity is there ahead to secure a top-three spot with a two-game spread between the third and sixth seed.

During the latest episode of the “Game Over” podcast on The Ringer, agent Rich Paul said he believes that the intense moment showcased the healthy relationship between Redick and Doncic.

“That leads to a healthy relationship. That means there’s a profound respect for the player and should be a profound respect for the coach. It ultimately leads to a healthy relationship. ... When things happen in such a media-robust environment, we’re looking for the drama of it all,” Paul said. “The reality of it is, these guys are getting paid a lot of money to do a high-level job, the fact that there’s care shown, passion shown, and a competitive nature shown, I think that’s healthy."

There are many moments during a game when emotions run high, resulting in intense conversations on the sidelines between players and coaches. Redick and Doncic appear to have experienced just that during Saturday’s game against the Warriors.

It’s well known that both are extremely competitive, which can only intensify their feelings during intense moments. Meanwhile, it’s well established that Redick and Doncic already hold a strong relationship that dates back to their brief time playing together with the Dallas Mavericks.
