Wemby Drops 41 and Makes More History, Spurs Crush Warriors

In this story:
The Warriors were short and shorthanded on Wednesday night, and an ultra-aggressive Victor Wembanyama brutalized them for 41 as the Spurs pummeled Golden State 127-113.
It's been a special stretch of games for San Antonio as they're now 26-2 since the start of February behind Wembanyama, who makes history and otherworldly highlights as he bolsters his case for MVP every night. He finished with 41 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and no turnovers in just 29 minutes.
In the previous game Wembanyama set a new season high with 41 points and secured the third-fastest double-double in the play-by-play era. He followed it up with 41 and the fourth-fastest 20-10 game since the 1997-98 season, according to the Spurs. The team added that Wembanyama is just the third Spur to score 40 in consecutive games, joining George Gervin who did it six times and Ron Brewer. He's also the first Spur to notch 15+ points and 15+ rebounds in five consecutive games, passing Tim Duncan and David Robinson.
He's the youngest player with back-to-back games of at least 40 and 15 per ESPN, and the first Spur with 25 and 10 in the first half in the play-by-play era. Wemby attempted a season-high 27 shots against Chicago, and was even more efficient at Golden State as he shot 16-22 from the floor and didn't turn it over once. He said earlier this week that he could see himself upping the aggression as the playoffs approach, saying that he'd do whatever it takes.
"I felt like I needed my offense to get back to a certain level, but it shouldn't be at the cost of defense either," Wembanyama said after that Bulls win.
San Antonio didn't shoot the ball super well against the Warriors at just 15-47 from outside, and they turned it over 15 times for the game. They won the game in the trenches, beating the Warriors 52-44 in the paint, 48-39 on the glass, and 24-15 from the free throw line.
Six other Spurs scored in double figures against the Warriors, who had only nine players available in this game and fought hard throughout. Stephon Castle looked sharp and aggressive, adding 15 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds. No Spur played more than 29 minutes, extra important with a game against the Clippers Thursday night in Los Angeles.
ESPN's broadcast noted before the game that Wemby had the most lob dunks in the NBA since the All-Star Break, and he added five lob finishes in the first half. Lately San Antonio's smaller players have done a great job of understanding his gigantic catch radius and maximizing the unprecedented threat that he poses as a lob catcher.
In addition to the traditional big man stuff, Wembanyama put his versatility on display in this one. According to the Spurs, Wembanyama is one of only 15 players with multiple games of 40 points, 15 rebounds, and multiple made 3s, and he did it in the last two games.
Asked by ESPN's Scott Van Pelt after the game if he sees any areas where he wants to get better, Wembanyama spoke about putting it all together.
"I would say sometimes I try to get some areas of my game to improve, and forget other areas," Wembanyama said. "I would say it's doing everything at the same time, all the time."
This is the first time the Spurs have won 26 games in any 28-game stretch in franchise history. They've won 10 games in a row twice this season, both during that stretch, and it's the first time that has happened since they won the title in the 2013-14 season.
Asked postgame about the often-cited lack of experience for this young team as they head into their first playoff run together, Wembanyama smiled.
"We don't have experience, right? Screw it," he said. "I mean, that's all we got. We're not going to play any different way just because it is this way. I mean, we're still going to play 100% and go to try to win this championship. Screw it."

Wembanyama wants to win as much as possible as soon as possible, from the title to individual awards like Defensive Player of the Year and MVP. Asked how important it is for him to be recognized as the best player in the league, the 22-year-old explained that he isn't just competing against his contemporaries; he's trying to be one of the game's all-time greats.
"I do care deeply about it, and I think that all the greats that are in the Hall of Fame, or that are in our mind the best of all time, they have fought and grabbed everything they could grab early on in their career. If I want to make my spot among the greats, I gotta try to not miss any occasion. I have to put my name up there."
