Cowboys' Anthony Spencer out Week 1, will not go on PUP list

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer will not play in Week 1, but will avoid being placed on the regular season PUP list. Dallas owner Jerry Jones said Spencer will be on the 53-man roster to start the season.

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer will not play in Week 1, but will avoid being placed on the regular season PUP list.

Dallas owner Jerry Jones said in an interview with 105.3 The Fan Spencer will be on the 53-man roster to start the season. If Spencer were placed on the regular season PUP list he would be forced to sit out at a minimum of six weeks.

Spencer played in only one game last season before undergoing microfracture surgery on his knee. He had started 61 of the Cowboys' 64 regular season games over the previous four seasons and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2012.

The Cowboys defense is in a state of flux, with Rod Marinelli taking over as defensive coordinator after the demotion of Monte Kiffin. The Dallas defense will also be without cornerback Orlando Scandrick after he failed a drug test
