Former rugby player Jarryd Hayne has made the San Francisco 49ers 53-man roster, he announced Saturday.

The Australian rugby star signed with the 49ers in March. Hayne, 27, is a former MVP of the National Rugby league. He quit the sport last October to pursue an NFL career.

Hayne has played running back and returned punts for the 49ers. He played well during the preseason, running for over 50 yards in two games and showing skills as a return man.

Hayne will now join a backfield including Carlos Hyde and Reggie Bush.
