The Miami Dolphins promoted running back Jonas Gray to their active roster, the team announced on Friday.

Gray, 25, signed with the Dolphins’ practice squad on Tuesday after the New England Patriots released him on Saturday.

Gray had previously signed with the Dolphins in 2012 as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame and spent time on Miami’s practice roster that season.

In 2013, Gray was a practice player for the Baltimore Ravens before signing a future/reserve contract with the New England Patriots in January 2014, and then moving to the team’s practice squad.

In October 2014, the Patriots signed Gray to their active roster. He played in eight games for New England and rushed for 412 yards and five touchdowns.

After rushing for four touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts last November, Gray made history as the first player in Patriots franchise history to do so and appeared on that week’s Sports Illustrated cover
