Haskins was the 15th overall pick, with the early expectation being he would learn Washington’s offense as a backup to both Case Keenum and Colt McCoy. The season, though, has gone off the rails for the Redskins (1-8), who fired coach Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start and both Keenum and McCoy have suffered injuries at various points.

Haskins made an inauspicious NFL debut in Week 4 against the New York Giants, getting intercepted three times. He made a second relief stint in Week 8 vs. Minnesota, but attempted just five passes while playing the entire second half of a 19-9 loss. Haskins then made his first start in Washington’s 24-9 loss to Buffalo on Nov. 3, completing 15-of-22 passes for 144 yards without a touchdown or interception.

The rookie had trouble moving the offense, which failed to score touchdowns on either of its trips inside the red zone and finished with 243 yards. Coming out of the bye week, Redskins interim coach Bill Callahan named Haskins starter for the remainder of the season. He will be joined by running back Derrius Guice, who will be activated off injured reserve after recovering from a knee injury.

Guice, the team’s second-round pick in 2018 who missed all of that season with a torn ACL, has played just one game for the Redskins—their season-opening loss at Philadelphia.

Haskins will look to restrengthen his connection with Ohio State teammate Terry McLaurin, who has been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season. The fellow rookie and third-round pick leads the Redskins with 32 catches, 497 yards and five touchdowns.

New York (2-7) has endured an equally miserable season, but is looking to post back-to-back victories for the first time since Weeks 5 and 6 of last season after holding off the New York Giants 34-27 last Sunday. Sam Darnold rallied the Jets from a six-point, third-quarter deficit, engineering a go-ahead touchdown drive capped by Le’Veon Bell’s 1-yard touchdown run early in the final period.

Darnold finished 19-of-30 for 230 yards and a touchdown, while also running for a second score. More importantly, Darnold did not commit a turnover after throwing eight interceptions and losing a fumble in the previous three games—all losses.

Safety Jamal Adams had arguably his best game as a pro with two sacks, two forced fumbles and a strip and score of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones early in the third quarter. The run defense also did its job, limiting Saquon Barkley to a single yard on 13 carries.

The Jets have won the last two games between the teams, including a 34-20 victory in the most recent meeting in 2015. Washington leads the all-time series 8-3 and is 4-2 in the nation’s capital vs. New York.
