Kyle Shanahan Gives Update on ‘Real Deal’ Brock Purdy’s Return From Injury

With 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy back in full force after undergoing elbow surgery, coach Kyle Shanahan spoke highly about the recovery process of last year’s breakout star on Thursday after training camp.

“He’ll get there. He’s doing some good things,” Shanahan said, via Pro Football Talk. “We’re not worried about Brock. Brock’s the real deal, he knows how to play and we just have to have our team keep getting better and we’ll keep getting better as we go.”

Shanahan hasn’t officially named the 49ers’ starting quarterback for the 2023 season yet, but all signs point to Purdy, who will battle it out with former No. 3 pick Trey Lance, who missed the majority of the season after breaking his ankle, and Sam Darnold.

Purdy was the team’s third-string quarterback last year behind Jimmy Garoppolo as well, but Garoppolo signed with the Raiders this offseason.

Purdy started in the team’s final five games last season, posting a 5-0 record and leading the 49ers to the NFC championship as a rookie. The team ultimately lost the game to the Eagles, and this is when Purdy tore his UCL.
